Dual port USB Host controller from FTDI / Vinculum

For applications which need a USB interface with host controller capabilities, FTDI via the Vinculum brand offer the Vinculum VNC1L-1A device. It has two USB 2.0 full speed (12 Mbps) ports and has specific capabilities for mass storage devices such as transparent handling of FAT filesystems so that flash memory drives might be easily interfaced.

It has 28 GPIO pins allowing interfacing with peripherals and microcontrollers in several interface modes including parallel FIFO interface, SPI and UART.

FTDI's own firmware obviates the need for both USB programming knowledge and additional USB stack firmware licenses. Various features of the chip can be selected by using different firmware models, freely downloadable from the Vinculum website. This firmware and other programming is achieved via UART through USB, RS232 or MCU chips.
